What is Hairline Lowering?

Hairline Lowering is a cosmetic plastic surgery treatment that can improve your hairline and facial symmetry. It helps create more balanced and harmonious facial proportions while giving you a much more balanced hairline.

We have found that patients who undergo this surgery tend to have much better and quicker results than they would with hair restoration surgery only as transplanting hair can’t yield as much hair density in the desired area. This procedure is considered to be a “high patient satisfaction surgery” with a majority of our patients being very pleased with their results.

While this procedure is different from a Brow Lift, the two procedures can be combined for better results. For patients with more extreme space between their brow and hairline, Dr. Landford may recommend a hair transplant to advance your hairline, as well as hide any post-surgical marks

Who is a Good Candidate for Hairline Lowering?

You are a good candidate for this cosmetic procedure if you want to achieve better facial proportions and should meet most of the following criteria:

  • A non-smoker
  • In good overall health
  • Keep a positive attitude throughout your treatment and recovery
  • Maintain realistic expectations for your procedure results
  • Want to lower your hairline or reduce the size of your forehead

*Unfortunately, if you have a history of pattern balding, this surgery might not be the best choice for you. Please have a Hairline Lowering consultation with Dr. Landford to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

What are the steps of a Hairline Lowering Procedure?

When you come in for your Hairline Lowering, we will first administer anesthesia to numb your forehead. Once you are numb and ready to go, Dr. Landford will make an incision behind the first two rows of your existing hairline, which will allow her to move it to a lower and more natural position, as well as remove any excess forehead skin and the areas of hair recession on the sides of your scalp.

Finally, Dr. Landford will close the incisions in layers to create very fine sutures along the hairline which will help avoid noticeable scarring. She will use deep sutures to anchor your new hairline in place and apply a compression bandage.

The whole procedure can take up to two to four hours.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for Hairline Lowering?

Dr. Landford will make an incision along your hairline and remove a portion of the skin section from your forehead. While scarring is inevitable with practically any surgery, it should be well hidden within your hairline and will fade and smoothen out over time. Your hair will be able to grow back through the scar area.

Hairline Lowering Recovery

This procedure is on an outpatient basis, so once Dr. Landford releases you, a friend or relative can take you home to recover in comfort. Keep in mind that every patient’s healing time will vary, but your recovery period can take up to a few weeks. There will be some expected swelling and bruising, which should disappear after a few days.

Dr. Landford may suggest wearing a compression garment on the treated areas to help minimize swelling and provide your wound with additional protection. To achieve optimal results, it is incredibly important to follow any post-surgery instructions we give you. Patients will need to relax for the first three to five days while keeping their heads elevated; we recommend even using two or three pillows in a reclining chair for great results and to help reduce swelling.

Please use a cold compress or ice pack throughout your recovery to help alleviate any pain and reduce swelling and bruising, which will become more noticeable around your upper and lower eyelids, and cheeks in the following days, but will eventually subside.

Keep in mind that it will be normal to feel some mild itching and numbness during your recovery that can last up to a year. Your finer hairs will also begin to shed, but don’t worry! Your hair should return to normal as it grows back after about three months.

Most patients should see their final hairline results in about 12 – 18 months, with a natural look and feel.
