What are the Steps of a Breast Lift Procedure?

On the day of your Breast Lift procedure, you will first meet with Dr. Landford who will go over the details of your surgery. Once you feel comfortable and ready to continue, you will be administered anesthesia to make your surgical experience more comfortable. Depending on what is discussed during your consultation, this could be through intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

Next, Dr. Landford will use one or more incision patterns to achieve your Breast Lift. The most common Breast Lift options include an Anchor Breast Lift, a Crescent lift, a Donut lift, and a Lollipop Lift, all of which we discuss below.

After the incisions are made, Dr. Landford will reshape your breasts by lifting the underlying natural breast tissue to improve your breast contour and firmness, then repositioning the nipple and areola into a natural and more youthful position. If necessary, your areola can be reduced in size by removing excess skin around the perimeter. Any excess breast skin is removed to compensate for the loss of elasticity.

Once Dr. Landford is finished reshaping your breasts, she will tighten the remaining skin by closing up the incisions using layered sutures deep within your breast tissue – this helps create and support your newly shaped breasts. She will also use sutures, skin adhesives, and/or surgical tape to close the exterior skin. You will be provided with a surgical bra to add additional support and protection for your breasts and you will be taken to our recovery room as you awaken from sedation.

Surgical Techniques for Breast Lifts

Dr. Landford can use a variety of surgical techniques when performing Breast Lift procedures, and after your Breast Lift consultation, she will discuss which Breast Lift is best for you.

Anchor Lift

During an Anchor lift, the incision will encircle the areola, make a vertical line down the lower breast crease, and horizontally across your natural breast crease. This is typically used when more intensive lifting is required.

Crescent Incision

A Crescent Lift uses an arching incision that is made along the upper half of the areola. Next, Dr. Landford will remove excess skin, and if you are receiving breast augmentation, will insert the implants. Otherwise, she will reshape your breast mound and close the incisions.

Donut Incision

Also called a Peri-Areolar Lift, a Donut Lift involves making a circular incision around the entire areola. It is also often used to reduce the size of the areola. A Donut Lift is a more extensive lift that is best for breasts that are mildly sagging, however, Dr. Landford’s training and knowledge allow her to perform this surgery on women with significant sagging as well.

Lollipop Incision

A Lollipop Lift only requires two incisions to reshape your breast. Dr. Landford will make a vertical incision along your chest wall, then around the areola, giving this incision its playful name. It corrects moderate sagging and is a good option for women needing a slight lift.

Breast Lift with Breast Implants

Sometimes, a patient not only wants to improve their breasts’ perkiness but also increase their breast size; in this instance, Breast Augmentation is required. When performed, Dr. Landford will usually make an incision at the breast fold and place the implant in a pocket directly under the tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall. If this is something that you are interested in, please discuss it with Dr. Landford during your initial consultation.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for A Breast Lift?

Your incision placement is dependent on which technique Dr. Landford chooses to use. Some of the incision lines will be concealed in the natural breast contours, but unfortunately, there will be some visible lines on the breast surface. While these Breast Lift scars are permanent, they should fade and improve over time.

Breast Lift Recovery

Since a Mastopexy is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, you will be able to return home once Dr. Landford releases you from our recovery room. We recommend having a friend or relative available to provide you with a ride home.

It can take up to 24 hours to completely recover from the effects of the anesthesia, so it’s also recommended to have a qualified adult available to assist you around the house for the first week. Patients are typically advised to wear the support bra 24/7 for several weeks to help heal.

After the procedure, you can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising around your breasts; Dr. Landford can prescribe some temporary pain medication to help alleviate any pain during your initial recovery. You may feel tingling or numbness around the incisions, especially around the areola because there are a lot of nerve endings in that area. Over time, your incisions will heal and the swelling will gradually subside, as well as any visible scarring.

The recovery time varies based on several factors, such as the type of surgery and incisions. You must avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, or any activity that causes pain or discomfort. We will provide you with instructions on how to stay comfortable during recovery and how to achieve optimal results.

While you will see some improvements immediately, most patients will require six weeks or more to see the most dramatic improvement in their Breast Lift results. It is important to remember that this procedure may impact your ability to breastfeed.
