What is Microneedling?

Microneedling treatment uses a handheld wand that has very fine, sterilized needles that gently puncture your skin to create micro-injuries. Your body then naturally creates more collagen and elastin to heal these tiny punctures which in turn, strengthens your skin and helps resist signs of aging. Your top layer of skin (epidermis) is replaced with newer skin that is now full of collagen and elastin for improved texture and volume.

Microneedling is often used to treat the following conditions —  acne and surgical scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, and wrinkles. sagging skin, and stretch marks

Who is a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

At Landford Plastic Surgery, we believe good candidates for Microneedling are those with the following characteristics:

  • Requires treatment of scars or hyperpigmentation

What are the Steps of Microneedling?

When it’s time for your Microneedling treatment in Washington DC or Baltimore, we will make you as comfortable as possible in our reclining treatment chair. Once you are relaxed and ready to proceed, we will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the target area.

Then, Dr. Landford will use a pen-like device that contains several thousand tiny micro-needles to gently penetrate the surface of your skin and stimulate your natural healing response, increasing collagen production to tighten visible signs of aging.

The entire procedure typically takes 10 to 30 minutes and creates a layer of fresh, smoother-looking skin that can reduce scars, wrinkles, and blemishes.

Techniques for Microneedling

In addition to traditional microneedling, there are other ways to enhance your treatment results, such as:

RF Microneedling

RF Microneedling uses radiofrequency energy to help stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. This technique combines traditional Microneedling with the added benefit of heat energy to enhance the results. The treatment delivers controlled energy through a set of sterile microneedles, generating heat in the deeper layers of the skin to improve collagen and elastin production.

Microneedling with PRP/PRF

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) are taken directly from your blood through a standard blood withdrawal. Your blood is placed into a vial and then into a centrifuge. This centrifuge spins fast to separate these platelets, and depending on the speed, will produce either PRP or PRF.

Dr. Landford then uses this serum with the handheld microneedling device to puncture the skin. After creating these micro-injuries that stimulate your skin renewal, the PRP/PRF will help speed up your healing process.

SkinPen Microneedling

The SkinPen is not your classic CIT treatment because it is a state-of-the-art, FDA-approved device used during microneedling sessions to minimize the appearance of fine lines, moderate-to-severe wrinkles, deep folds, and scars all over the body.

During this painless treatment, the handheld device will penetrate your skin at a 1 mm depth using very tiny needles. It is incredibly precise in its controlled usage of stimulating your skin’s natural healing process by creating thousands of precise “micro-injuries” in your dermis, which in turn, promotes new, healthy collagen production. Your treatment time will vary based on the types of skin conditions you’re trying to treat, their severity, your lifestyle, the health of your collagen, and other factors.

You may need three to four treatments spaced six weeks apart to achieve the right results in the first year. If you have deep stretch marks or severe scarring, you may need up to six treatments for a marked improvement. Dr. Landford will make sure you are aware of how many treatments you will need during your consultation if the two of you choose this method of collagen induction therapy.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is another technique used to renew your overall skin tone and texture. During this treatment, Dr. Landford will use a wand-like applicator that is gently maneuvered over the surface of your skin to remove and exfoliate the top layer of your skin (epidermis). The handheld wand also has a vacuum attached to suction off the dead or loosened skin. The treatment will not hurt, so you won’t need anesthesia, but you will notice a vibration sensation throughout your treatment.

Microneedling Recovery

After the procedure, you will be able to return about your day but keep in mind that your skin may be slightly red or swollen, similar to a mild sunburn. This reaction is completely normal and should subside within a few hours to a few days. A soothing serum or cream will be applied before your leave to help calm and hydrate your skin. We strongly advise that you avoid any direct sunlight to make sure that your healthy new skin cells are not destroyed.
