What is Eyelid Surgery?

During a Blepharoplasty, or Eyelid Lift, Dr. Landford strategically removes excess skin, repositions underlying fat, and tightens muscles, all intending to create a harmonious and natural look. The result? Eyes that shine with newfound vitality, helping you regain your self-confidence and leave a lasting impression.

Blepharoplasty can be performed to address the upper or lower eyelids. When you meet with Dr. Landford at either one of her offices (Washington D.C. or Baltimore), she will have a better understanding of how your procedure should go.

Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

The best candidates for a Blepharoplasty are those who have the following characteristics:

  • Are genetically predisposed to have lower eyelid bags
  • Be in overall good health
  • Maintain realistic expectations for the results of their treatment
  • Want to eliminate excess skin
  • Have sunken lower eyelids

How Much Does Eyelid Surgery Cost in Washington DC & Baltimore?

The cost of Eyelid Surgery in Washington DC & Baltimore can vary on a number of factors, including the type of surgery and techniques that are used. What Should I Expect During a Consultation for Eyelid Surgery?

The first step to getting Eyelid Surgery in either Washington D.C. or Baltimore is to call Landford Plastic Surgery for your initial consultation. When you come to meet with Dr. Wilmina Landford, she will listen to your aesthetic concerns and answer any questions that you may have.

Your pre-operative evaluation will include a thorough medical and ophthalmic history, along with a detailed eye examination which will take into account your brow position, eyelid ptosis, lower eyelid position, and cheek projection. It is very important to be completely honest with Dr. Landford when having your Blepharoplasty consultation because the information you provide here will help prevent unnecessary risks.

Once the proper procedure is decided on and the two of you finalize the remaining aspects of the surgery, Dr. Landford will create your surgical plan. Our Patient Coordinator will help schedule your surgery and provide you with any necessary information and directions to follow to create the best possible results.

How Do I Prepare for Eyelid Surgery?

After your consultation, we will provide you with some tips and instructions on how to achieve the best possible results from your procedure. While these directions will be catered to your individual needs, some of the more common things to keep in mind includes:

  • Fill your medications before surgery
  • Quit smoking
  • Make meal preparations
  • Prepare for your recovery (i.e. requesting appropriate time off of work, finding a family member or friend who can provide you with a ride home and possibly aid you during the first week of your recovery, etc.)

What are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

Our Blepharoplasty patients in both Washington D.C. and Baltimore have been able to enjoy the following benefits from their procedure:

  • Boosts your self-confidence
  • Customizable
  • Gives your eyes a more youthful shape
  • Improved peripheral vision and field of vision
  • Long-lasting results
  • Makes you look more rested and alert
  • Minimal scarring

What are the Steps of Eyelid Surgery?

When it’s time for your Blepharoplasty procedure, we will make sure you feel as comfortable and confident as possible. Local anesthesia is used around your eyes and is paired with mild sedation during the procedure for added comfort. Dr. Landford will make incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids, removing any excess tissue. To close them up, she uses extremely small stitches, which stay in place for three to six days.

If both your upper and lower lids are done at the same time, the entire surgery usually takes two hours.

Surgical Techniques for Eyelid Surgery

A Blepharoplasty, or Eyelid Lift, in Washington DC or Baltimore, can be performed as a singular-focused treatment on either your upper or lower lids or as a combination of both to achieve a more rejuvenated appearance.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

An Upper Blepharoplasty or Upper Eyelid Lift can provide various benefits, including improved vision for individuals whose sagging eyelids obstruct their sight, as well as a more alert and vibrant look. Excess skin is removed and underlying fat deposits are removed or repositioned.

During Upper Eyelid surgery, Dr. Landford carefully makes incisions along the natural creases of the upper eyelids, ensuring that scars are well hidden.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The primary goal of a Lower Blepharoplasty, or Lower Eyelid Lift, is to achieve a balanced and natural appearance that harmonizes with the rest of the face. The procedure can help alleviate the appearance of under-eye bags, reduce puffiness, and diminish the appearance of wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful and revitalized overall look. Dr. Landford typically makes incisions either just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid, depending on the specific concerns being addressed. Through these incisions, excess fat deposits can be repositioned or removed, and any loose or sagging skin can be carefully trimmed.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for Eyelid Surgery?

During Eyelid Surgery, your incisions will be hidden in the natural folds of your eyes. For Lower Eyelid Surgery, they are either along the lash line or hidden within the lower lid, whereas Upper Eyelid Surgery places the incision in the creases, but can occasionally extend slightly outside the lid into your crow’s feet.

Any scarring that does occur will be naturally hidden, but will also fade over time to become even more discreet.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

After coming out of sedation in our recovery room, you will be released to be driven home by one of your friends or family members. As you recover in your home, you should focus on getting plenty of rest and relaxation for the first week or so.

Immediately after your surgery, you can expect puffy, reddened eyelids, as well as some swelling and bruising that may resemble a “black eye”. We like to remind our patients that recovery from this surgery will take some time, so please be patient as your eyelids heal. Most patients can get back to their regularly scheduled activities in about 10 – 14 days after a Blepharoplasty.

You will want to shield your eyes from sunlight and other elements during your initial healing time by wearing dark sunglasses to cover your eyes and a hat for additional coverage from the sun; sunscreen will also be of important use during your initial recovery. When you follow these instructions, you will have a much better opportunity to achieve your optimal results.

Once you’re fully healed, you’ll have younger and brighter eyes!
