What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of your labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips) of the female genitalia. Most female patients utilize a Labiaplasty to ease discomfort, improve functionality, or purely for aesthetic reasons. This procedure is commonly combined with other nonsurgical procedures which offer tightening to the area.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Labiaplasty?

The best candidates for a Baltimore or Washington DC Labiaplasty are women who:

  • Are self-conscious and dislike the size or the appearance of their external genitalia
  • Developed significant labial changes after birth or have always had large and/or irregular labia major, minora, or both
  • Experience irritation caused by certain clothing
  • Have discomfort during sex and other physical activities

What are the Benefits of a Labiaplasty?

Some of the many benefits that Dr. Landford has seen her Baltimore and Washington DC Labiaplasty patients enjoy include:

  • Better hygiene and overall health
  • Certain clothing is typically more comfortable
  • Less visibility of the labia minora
  • Improved appearance of the vulva/vaginal area
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Increased sexual pleasure
  • Reduction in pain or discomfort

What are the Steps of a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty at Landford Plastic Surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. Once you’re comfortable and confidently ready to proceed, Dr. Landford will begin the procedure.

Dr. Landford will make precise incisions to carefully reshape the labia minora (inner lips) and clitoral hood. The goal is to reduce excess tissue and achieve the desired aesthetic or functional improvements. Dr. Landford will then use dissolvable stitches to close the incisions. These stitches eliminate the need for suture removal later on.

Overall, the surgery typically takes one to two hours and patients can usually return home the same day.

Surgical Techniques for a Labiaplasty

Dr. Landford can use a variety of techniques to improve your vaginal appearance through removal, shortening, or reshaping of your labia majora, labia minora, or both.

Central Wedge Method

The wedge technique is a method in which Dr. Landford removes a V-shaped “wedge” from both sides of the labia minora and then stitches the remaining edges together.

Clitoral Unhooding

Also referred to as Hoodectomy, this method removes the surrounding “hood” that sheaths the clitoral node on three sides (also called Prepuce tissue). While this hood is designed to protect the clitoris from overstimulation, some women with smaller clitoral nodes or a larger hood find themselves unable to achieve an orgasm, or at least have a harder time climaxing.

Trim Method/Edge Resection

This technique trims the excess tissue from the edge of the labia minora. It removes enough loose labial skin to make the resulting labia look smaller and thinner. At the same time, the entire edge of the labia is preserved and any rugosity is tightened up to make the labia look smoother.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for a Labiaplasty?

A priority for Dr. Landford is to provide you with natural results. The location of the incisions and resulting scars for a Labiaplasty procedure can vary depending on the specific surgical technique used and the individual patient’s anatomy and preferences. The incisions seen in all resection methods are often discreet and placed within the natural folds of the skin to minimize visible scarring. In the Trim method, the resulting incisions are typically made along the edge of the inner lips while the incisions for the Wedge Method are typically made along the inner lips’ length, extending inward from the labial edge.

Labiaplasty Recovery

After the surgery, you will spend some time in the recovery area under observation. It is common to experience some discomfort, swelling, and mild bruising in the genital area during the first few days after the procedure. Dr. Landford will prescribe you pain medications to manage any post-operative pain. Resting is crucial during the initial recovery phase. Avoid strenuous physical activities and sexual intercourse for several weeks to allow the surgical area to heal properly.

Remember that individual healing times and experiences may vary, so it’s crucial to follow Dr. Landford’s specific post-operative instructions and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery and satisfactory results. It’s essential to be patient with the healing process. We are always available if you have any concerns or questions regarding your recovery.
