What Should I Expect During a Consultation for Eyelid Surgery?

The first step patients in the Northern Virginia area must take to get eyelid surgery in either Washington, D.C., or Maryland is to contact Landford Plastic Surgery for an initial consultation. After coming from the Northern Virginia area, you’ll meet with Dr. Wilmina Landford in her private office, where you will share your questions, concerns, and aesthetic goals.

You will also attend a pre-operative evaluation, which will include an in-depth medical and ophthalmic history, along with a detailed eye examination, which will cover your brow position, eyelid ptosis, lower eyelid position, and cheek projection. It is critical to be completely honest with Dr. Landford during your blepharoplasty consultation, as inaccurate information can lead to unnecessary risks.

How Do I Prepare for Eyelid Surgery?

After your consultation, we will provide you with instructions to help you achieve optimal results from your surgery as you recover at home in the Northern Virginia area. While these instructions will be tailored to the individual needs of the patient, some common things to keep in mind are:

    • Fill your medications before surgery
    • Quit smoking
    • Make meal preparations
    • Prepare for your recovery (e.g., requesting appropriate time off from work, finding a family member or friend who can take you home and possibly help you during the first week of your recovery).

Eyelid Surgery Risks & Safety

When performed by a talented plastic surgeon like Dr. Landford, a blepharoplasty is a very safe procedure. Although there are still some complications associated with the procedure. Many of eyelid surgery’s side effects are temporary and expected, including:

    • Blurred vision
    • Sensitivity to light
    • Swelling and bruising of the eyelid area
    • Pain or discomfort

You can reduce the discomfort by using ice packs on your eyes on and off for 10 minutes, 4-5 times a day. Use prescribed ointments or eyedrops to reduce any swelling, dryness, or discomfort caused by the surgery.

Though highly unlikely, some serious complications from eyelid surgery can happen. Please contact our office immediately if you experience any of the following:

      • Abnormal coloring or healing of the eyelids
      • Bleeding
      • Differences in vision
      • Infections
      • Vision problems

If you experience long-lasting or concerning reactions at any point, please contact our office immediately.

What are the Steps of Eyelid Surgery?

Before we begin your blepharoplasty surgery, we will make sure you are completely comfortable and confident. The surgery uses local anesthesia around the eyes and is paired with mild sedation during the procedure for added comfort. Dr. Landford will create incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids and remove any excess tissue. To close the incisions, she uses extremely fine stitches that remain in place for 3-6 days before removal.

If you get upper and lower eyelid surgery at the same time, the entire surgery will take around two hours.

Surgical Techniques for Eyelid Surgery

A blepharoplasty in the Northern Virginia area can be performed as a single-focused treatment for the upper or lower eyelids, or as a combination procedure to achieve a more comprehensive, refreshed appearance.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

An upper blepharoplasty, or upper eyelid lift, offers several benefits, including improved vision if you have sagging eyelids that obstruct your vision and a more alert, vibrant look. You’ll also have a more youthful appearance, with excess skin and underlying fat removed.

During upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Landford makes careful incisions along the natural creases of the upper eyelids, ensuring discreet scarring.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The primary goal of a lower blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid lift, is to achieve a balanced and natural appearance that naturally blends with the rest of the face. The procedure reduces the appearance of under-eye bags and puffiness, and diminishes wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful, refreshed overall look.

Dr. Landford typically makes incisions either just below the lash line or within the lower eyelid, depending on the patient’s individual needs and aesthetic goals. Through these incisions, she repositions or removes excess fat deposits and trims any loose or sagging skin.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for Eyelid Surgery?

During eyelid surgery, the incisions are hidden in the natural folds of your eyes. For lower eyelid surgery, the incisions are placed either along the lash line or hidden within the lower lid. Upper eyelid surgery places the incision in the creases, but can sometimes extend a little outside the lid into your crow’s feet.

Scarring, if present, will be discreet and fade over time to be even less noticeable.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

After your eyelid surgery, you will be able to leave the same day, but someone will need to drive you home in the Northern Virginia area. As you recover at home, prioritize rest and relaxation for the first week to allow your body to heal when the surgery is fresh.

Immediately after your surgery, you will experience some puffiness, reddened eyelids, and some swelling and bruising similar to a “black eye.” Recovery does not happen quickly, so please be patient as your eyelids heal. Patients are usually able to return to their regularly scheduled activities in about 10-14 days after surgery. Follow all instructions provided by Dr. Landford and the rest of our time, and plan ahead to ensure responsibilities are covered.

Wear dark sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen for the initial recovery period to avoid direct sunlight on your eyelids. Following these instructions will lead to a quicker, smoother recovery and help you achieve optimal results.

Once you’re fully healed, you’ll have brighter, more youthful eyes that shine!
