What is a Brow Lift?

Your brow’s positioning can have a very serious effect on your facial appearance, particularly on the region around the eyes. While the descent of your brows may not be as obvious as other regions of your face, it does occur and can result in significant aesthetic changes. A low brow can sometimes be mistaken for eyelid aging as it obscures this area, contributing to that tired appearance. When performed properly in selected patients, Brow Lifts can lead to very nice and natural results.

In addition to these unpleasant facial expressions, brow descent will lead to a “crowding” of the eyes by excess eyelid skin. The “hooding” of eyelid skin, in addition to the feeling of eyelid heaviness, will often lead to a subconscious drive to use your forehead muscles to counteract the drooping brow. Though this action is the development of forehead creases and lines that will deepen over time. A Brow Lift or Forehead lift, often in combination with fat grafting to restore volume, can significantly improve these facial features, and restore a person’s naturally rested, rejuvenated appearance. Not only will the elevation of the brow lead to a more “open and alert” appearance to the eyes, but it will also naturally diminish the development of the forehead lines which leads to a more aged appearance.

How Do I Prepare for Brow Lift Surgery?

What are the steps of a Brow Lift?

When you come in for your Brow Lift surgery in Washington DC or Maryland, you will be administered either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia, depending on what is discussed during your consultation. Once the anesthesia begins to take effect, Dr. Landford will begin the brow lift surgery that was discussed during your consultation.

Most Brow Lift surgeries will take about one to two hours.

Surgical Techniques for a Brow Lift

Dr. Landford will use one or several techniques when performing your Brow Lift, which may include:

Coronal Brow Lift

Dr. Landford will make an incision behind your hairline and across the top of your head, either from ear to ear or primarily on the top of your head. Your forehead is then lifted into its new position, with the scalp in front of the incision overlapping the scalp behind it. Any part of the overlapping scalp will be removed and the remaining portions of your scalp are sewn together.

This technique cannot be typically performed on people with high hairlines, thin hair, or who are likely to lose their hair.

Direct Brow Lift

Sometimes referred to as a “Gull Wing” Lift, a direct lift removes a section of skin and underlying tissue just above the eyebrows or in the mid-forehead. This method beautifully lifts a sagging brow while simultaneously tightening and smoothing the forehead by pulling the skin and tissue of the forehead down rather than up. This allows the hairline to be lowered, which is ideal for a receding hairline or high forehead, and can even address your eyebrow shape and asymmetry. Dr. Landford is careful to position the scar just along the eyebrows so that it is maximally camouflaged as shown below.

This procedure is best for a patient with a severe brow droop that already has significant forehead wrinkles which hide the incision. It is also preferred for patients with an extremely thin or balding hairline. As it is a less invasive procedure, it can often be done under local anesthesia.

Endoscopic Temporal Brow Lift

During this method, several small incisions will be made behind your hairline. Dr. Landford will then use an endoscope, which is a long, thin tube with a light and a tiny camera mounted on its end. She will insert the endoscope through one of the incisions for easier viewing of your underlying muscles and tissues.

Next, she will use another instrument that is inserted through a different incision to lift your forehead tissues and then anchor them in place using sutures or tiny screws. The incisions are then closed with stitches or small clips.

Hairline Brow Lift

Also called a Pretrichial Brow Lift, a hairline brow lift requires Dr. Landford to make an incision between the top of your forehead and the beginning of your hairline. Next, she will remove a small portion of skin and tissue from the top of your forehead, rather than your scalp. Although this technique requires a longer incision along the hairline, it is the longest-lasting lift with aesthetically “friendly” scarring results.

This method will not pull your hairline back, which is why it’s commonly performed on patients with a high-receding hairline, however, depending upon healing, a scar may be visible along the hairline.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for a Brow Lift?

A Brow Lift procedure usually involves making an incision behind the hairline across the top of the head, from ear to ear, or primarily on the top of the head. Then the forehead is lifted into its new position, with the scalp in front of the incision overlapping the scalp behind it.

Dr. Landford strives to make the incisions in discreet locations so that when scarring does inevitably occur, it won’t be as prominent. Scarring will fade over time.

Brow Lift Recovery

After your Brow Lift at our Washington DC or Maryland surgery centers, you will be able to return home once Dr. Landford releases you, however, we highly recommend that you have a family member or friend provide you a ride home. Our patients are encouraged to take the first week off from work so that they can recover comfortably.

While you are recovering, you will probably experience some slight discomfort and tightness throughout your forehead. You can also expect to swell and bruising to occur, which usually subsides after two weeks. Dr. Landford will also prescribe you some temporary pain medication to ease any pain during the beginning stages of your recovery.

After the first week of your surgery, you will need to return for a follow-up appointment where Dr. Landford will remove the sutures from your head and examine your healing. At this time, you will be able to return to a sedentary position at work, but you may notice that you might become tired a little faster than usual, so an initially limited work schedule is advised. Within two to four weeks post-surgery, you can gradually resume exercise with Dr. Landford’s clearance.

Despite the technique you receive, most patients usually return to their normal daily routine in one to two weeks.
