What is a Chin Implant?

A Chin Implant is a pre-formed silicone device, designed to reshape the chin or lower jaw. The procedure can improve the overall appearance of the face, correcting a weak or recessed jaw. Once the chin is in proportion to the other features, the appearance will see a dramatic improvement. The Chin Implant used by Dr. Landford will be made of a smooth, flexible material such as Silicone.

What is Genioplasty?

Another option in chin correction is to use a patient’s bone and tissue that is cut and repositioned, also known as Genioplasty.

While it is a form of chin augmentation, Genioplasty (chin surgery) corrects receding chins, chin misalignment, or excessive chins, rather than adding an implant. This plastic surgery procedure is a good option for patients who are concerned with the position, shape, or contour of their chin. It can be most effective for patients with a small or receding chin.

Who is a Good Candidate for Chin Implant Surgery?

The best candidates for Chin Implant surgery are individuals who have specific concerns or desires regarding the appearance of their chin and overall facial balance. The following characteristics may make someone in either the Washington D.C. or Maryland area a suitable candidate for chin implant surgery:

  • Facial asymmetry
  • Lack of chin definition
  • Weak or recessed chin
  • At a stable weight
  • Have a good, positive attitude during all the stages of surgery and recovery
  • Maintain realistic expectations for the results
  • Nonsmokers
  • Physically healthy

What are the Steps of a Chin Implant Procedure

On the day of your Chin Implant/Chin Augmentation surgery, we will first administer general anesthesia to make your experience more tolerable and comfortable. To begin the procedure, Dr. Landford will make a small incision inside of your lower lip or along the crease below the chin. Through this opening, the Chin Implant is inserted and anchored to the bone.

Once the corrections are complete, sutures are placed for appropriate healing, and bandages will cover them and provide additional protection.

A Chin Implant procedure will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes to perform, depending on the specific correction needed.

Surgical Techniques for a Chin Implant

Dr. Landford can use several techniques when performing your Chin Implant or Chin Augmentation, so depending on what is discussed during your consultation, you can expect one of the following methods:

Intraoral Approach

When performing an intraoral approach, a 2 – 3 cm incision can be made inside your mouth where the gum meets the lip. Dr. Landford makes a subsequent dissection through the mentalis muscle down to the periosteum where she will insert your new implant. The incision is cleaned out with an antibiotic solution and then closed in layers using absorbable sutures, creating a water-tight seal.

While this technique will not leave an external scar, there is a higher risk of infections because your mouth has a higher concentration of bacteria. While it’s not “impossible” to keep your incision clean, it is very important to follow all instructions for post-care to achieve the best and safest results.

Submental Transcutaneous Approach

During this method, Dr. Landford makes an approximately 2 cm midline incision placed just behind your submental crease. Next, using a scalpel or electrosurgical knife, the skin and underlying soft tissues are gently dissected through the mentalis muscle, and down to the mandible, creating a tight pocket to insert the implant, which is secured with sutures.

The incision is closed in layers using both absorbable and non-absorbable sutures. Dr. Landford will finally apply a splint-like dressing using antibiotic ointment, non-adhesive gauze, and adhesive tape.

Sliding Genioplasty

Also called Osseous Genioplasty, this technique will realign your chin by cutting and moving parts of your chin bone. It can be used to correct a very long or short chin, align your bite, or fix the appearance of a chin that is set either too far back or forward.

In addition to all of the characteristics of a potential Chin Implant patient, a good candidate for this procedure should not have a jaw disorder and has reached full skeletal maturity.

During surgery, Dr. Landford will pull down your lower lip and make a horizontal incision at the base of your jawline. She will then perform the Osteotomy, which is when a surgical saw is used to cut away part of your chin bone. Depending on your individual realignment needs, Dr. Landford will then move this detached bone forward, backward, or sideways.

If you require a longer chin to be shortened, a piece of bone will be completely removed, whereas if a shorter chin needs to be lengthened, Dr. Landford will leave a little space between the bifurcated bone, allowing new bone to eventually grow to fill in the space. Dr. Landford may also use special medical tools to reshape your chin to naturally fit in with the rest of your facial features.

Your cut bone will be secured using wire, plates, or screws, and Dr. Landford will close the incision using dissolvable stitches. A surgical dressing or bandage will also be applied along the incision inside your mouth, and a supportive dressing may be used on the outside of your mouth just below your lower lip and under your chin for additional protection and support.

Since the incision is made inside your mouth, you will have no visible scarring.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for a Chin Implant?

Most incisions for a Chin Implant are placed in the natural crease line under the chin or inside the mouth where your gum and lower lip meet. Depending on the location of the incision, your scar will either be discreet or completely hidden in your mouth.

Chin Implant Recovery

Once Dr. Landford is finished with your Chin Implant procedure, you will be placed in our recovery room until you come out of sedation. Once she feels that you are capable of going home, you will be released from our care and able to return home. It’s advisable to have a relative or friend available to give you a ride and even help you for the first few days of your initial recovery.

Initially, there may be some swelling or bruising that occurs, although these will resolve over the first two weeks. You may also experience some mild to moderate discomfort, but Dr. Landford will prescribe the appropriate pain medications to keep you comfortable at home. You will also be given some suggested dietary modifications to promote successful healing in the first week or so post-surgery.

Most patients are ready to return to work or school in about three to five days, with an expected full Chin Implant recovery to take approximately two to six weeks. Once you are completely healed, your face will be balanced and your chin will look stronger.
