A Lip Lift is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of your lips by shortening the distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose. During the procedure, excess skin is removed and the remaining tissue is repositioned to lift and reshape the upper region of the mouth.

What is a Lip Lift?

A Lip Lift is a sophisticated cosmetic surgical procedure designed to enhance the aesthetics of the upper lip and rejuvenate the overall appearance of the face. Over time, factors such as aging, genetics, and sun exposure can lead to a lengthening of the upper lip, causing it to appear less voluminous and youthful. The Lip Lift procedure involves precisely removing a small amount of skin from the area between the base of the nose and upper lip, resulting in a subtle elevation of the lip. This elevation not only restores a more youthful contour but also exposes a larger portion of the link vermilion (the red part of the lips), creating a fuller and more appealing appearance. Lip Lift procedures are tailored to the individual’s unique facial features, ensuring natural-looking results that beautifully complement the entire face.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift?

The best candidates for a Lip Lift procedure are individuals who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their lips and desire to achieve a more balanced and pleasing lip contour. Ideal candidates may have one or more of the following concerns:

  • Thin or flat lips
  • Long upper lip
  • Lack of lip definition
  • Have received Lip Fillers, but are unhappy with the results

We encourage our patients to have a positive attitude during every step of their treatment, especially during recovery, and maintain realistic expectations for their final results.

What are the Steps of a Lip Lift?

While your Lip Lift procedure will vary slightly depending on what technique(s) you and Dr. Landford decide on, you’re overall experience will be relatively similar.

You will arrive at our surgical center and meet with Dr. Landford. She will make some temporary marks on your lips where she intends on making the incision lines. You will then be given either a local anesthetic or general anesthesia (depending on your consultation) to numb the area around your mouth and minimize any pain or discomfort.

At the time of the procedure, Dr. Landford will carefully make discreet incisions along the natural creases of your nose to help reduce the appearance of scarring. She will remove any excess skin and reposition the remaining tissue to elevate your upper lip. Once she is finished, the incisions will be closed and bandages will be applied for added protection.

The entire Lip Lift procedure typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the case and any additional procedures being performed.

Surgical Techniques for a Lip Lift

Depending on the patient’s individual needs, Dr. Landford can use a variety of techniques to help her Washington DC & Maryland Lip Lift patients achieve the lips they desire, which can be performed on their own, or as a combination.

Bullhorn Lip Lift

Sometimes called a Subnasal Lip Lift, this technique can make your lips look fuller without the use of filler. Dr. Landford will shorten the space of the philtrum, which is the area between your lips and your nose. It’s called a Bullhorn Lift because it does leave a subtle scar along the nostrils that runs in a continuous line from one nostril to the other, similar to the shape of a bull’s horns.

Central Lip Lift

Very similar to a bullhorn lift, a Central Lip Lift shortens the space between the nose and the lips with an incision at the lower nose.

Corner Lip Lift

A Corner Lip Lift is done by making two small incisions at both corners of the mouth and removing a small amount of skin. It’s a great option for people who feel they have downturned lips and is often combined with another lip lift to create fuller lips.

This technique is also called a “Grin Lift” because it gives the face a more smiley appearance.

Direct Lip Lift

A Direct Lip Lift, also called a Gullwing Lip Lift, creates a more defined lip border. Dr. Landford will remove a thin strip of skin just above the upper lip, and then pull the remaining skin upwards to create the illusion of a more pronounced vermillion (the pink part of the lips).

This procedure typically leaves behind a scar on the upper lip area.

Where are the Incisions and Scars for Lip Lift?

Most Lip Lifts require an incision to be made directly under the nose. While Dr. Landford does her absolute best to be discreet with the incisions, scarring is inevitable with any surgery. These scars will fade over time but can be potentially visible.
