What are the Steps of Otoplasty?

On the day of your otoplasty surgery, you can expect to arrive at our facility, where our team will greet you with confidence and professionalism, ensuring a smooth and reassuring experience. After completing any necessary paperwork and preparation, you’ll be taken to our operating room, where the procedure will take place.

Before the surgery begins, you’ll receive anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Dr. Landford will then perform the otoplasty, reshaping and repositioning the ears to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome.

This is done by making an incision behind the ear, within the natural fold, to minimize visible scarring. In some cases, additional incisions may be made within the ear’s natural creases. Once the incision is made, Dr. Landford and our team will access the ear’s cartilage through the incisions and reshape it to achieve the desired contour. This may involve removing excess cartilage, folding or scoring the cartilage, or suturing it into a new position. Once the cartilage has been reshaped, she will use internal stitches to secure it in place and maintain the new ear shape.

An otoplasty will usually take between one and three hours.

Surgical Techniques for Otoplasty

Dr. Landford will use one or several techniques when performing your Otoplasty, which will be determined by you needs. These are some of the techniques Dr. Landford can use to treat certain defects:

Anti-Helical Fold Creation

There are different techniques available to correct the anti-helical fold, which are categorized into Scoring or Fixaton, however, some patients may require a combination. Cartilage scoring techniques can utilize anterior and posterior approaches, and superficial and full-thickness scoring too. Suture fixation corrects prominence in the upper ⅓ of the ear using mattress sutures that are placed in the posterior cartilage to incorporate the full thickness of the cartilage and the anterior perichondrium (connective tissue), but not the anterior skin.

Conchal Defect Correction

Conchal defects can be corrected by sutures, excisional techniques, and scoring. Dr. Landford can use Conchal-Mastoid sutures to correct the conchal excess or prominence in the higher ⅔ of your ear. These non-absorbable mattress sutures help pull the concha (central part of the ear) towards your head and reduce ear prominence. She may also use scoring and excisional techniques to achieve a better look. Excisional techniques are best suited for conchal hypertrophy (overgrown cartilage that causes the entire ear to stick out).

Where are the incisions and scars for Otoplasty?

Whenever possible, Dr. Landford takes extra care in making sure your otoplasty incisions are placed in discreet areas, usually on the back of the ear, where the scars can be camouflaged.

The incisions may be made within the inner creases of the ears, or on the backs of the ears. When incisions are made on the front of the ear, they are made within the folds to hide them.

Please keep in mind that the location of the incisions and any resulting scarring will depend on the technique that Dr. Landford chooses.

Immediately following the procedure, some discomfort, swelling, and bruising around the ears are normal, and manageable with prescribed pain medication and cold compresses. Wearing a protective dressing may be necessary to support the ears and reduce swelling. Activity restrictions, such as avoiding strenuous activities, are advised to prevent complications.
